Life Skills

Well, today is one of those days where I'm fairly confident that all will work out fine and that D. will live independently as an adult. I base this on the following:

I open the freezer and look for something to eat. D. sees the box of frozen fish sticks and says, "Fish sticks." I repeat this absently and move on to the pantry. D. meanwhile reopens the freezer (it's a bottom freezer) and takes a fish stick from the box. He goes to the toaster oven where such things are prepared, opens it, sticks the fish stick inside, closes the toaster oven, and turns the dial. When the bell dings a few seconds later, D. claps and says, "Yay, D! Fish stick!"

Really, what more does he need to know?

Honestly, I think the title of your last post said it all. Who's to say that he won't end up completely independent? No one knows, it's all just taking it one day at a time which it sounds to me like you're doing. I know it's probably not easy to read all of the literature out there and the worst-case scenarios but there's nothing that says he'll be among those. It sounds to me like you're doing a bang-up job making sure that he is, and will be, as independent as possible.

(Hope this didn't come across as assvice. I just want you to know that I think you're doing great and so is D.)

I just found your blog via a comment over at alittlepregnant. My son is asymptomatic/undx'ed for a very rare metabolic disorder. Long story short, I know just where you're coming from and I'm glad you're blogging. Vent away, and visit me anytime - 3mga.blogspot.com.
