Mother F(ill in the blank)

Dear Aetna:

Thank you so much for the bill you sent my son's speech therapy provider for all the speech you covered in the past, since you didn't mean to cover it. I totally understand that you accidentally told us you would cover it and slipped up even more by paying claims for a while, before deciding to stop with no warning. It's also really helpful that the speech therapy provider has added the amount you billed them back onto the total amount we own them, bringing it to the equivalent of several months of mortgage payments for us.

Bite me,
WG

If you will allow me, JESUS CHRIST WHAT THE FRACK??

It's time to enlist your local news channel. Don't they have one of those goofy consumer problem-solver segments once a week or something? You know, where some viewer who's getting screwed writes for help and the reporter scares the offending company with the prospect of bad PR broadcast to an entire major television market during prime time?

I agree with Teej - News channel, newspaper, and attorney. See if legal aid can help or if you have a friend who can at least lend a name to the next letter you write. I'm so angry for you I want to call on your behalf and read the riot act to every management hack I can get my hands on over there. :(

Oh, Teej, you can ALWAYS make me laugh. We are working this from several angles at once. And I am prepping my complaint with the state insurance commission. Slow going, but we don't give up easy. Just not sure I can show my face at therapy....

I am so glad you blog. Because it makes this 20-something college student care about health insurance a whole hell of a lot more. I am so sorry.

I agree!!! Time to call in the news crews, cuz this bites big time!!

Who ever heard of denying speech therapy coverage for a child who has the medical documentation to prove it's necessary????.

Come on! We're talking about LIFE here, Aetna! This boy's life.

We have the same issues with stupid Aetna. This year they've actually agreed to cover some speech therapy (after a big wig at my husband's company threatened to drop the company's account if they didn't), but now they won't cover any occupational therapy. Even though they did last year. And guess what? It's the same excuse they gave you - they "accidentally" covered 25 OT visits last year.

They absolutely discriminate against kids with developmental issues. I actually have an internal document re: their coerage policies for therapy. We got it after the HR dept at my husband's company hired a consultant to look into why they weren't covering our claims last year. I'll email it to you as soon as I find it. It'll make your blood boil (as if it's not already)!

One more suggestion about the media, if you haven't thought of it -- contact the people from Money magazine, from the article they wrote about your finances.

We need to start a posse to handle these insurance companies.
